Hutto’s approval of incentives for Jeff Bezos’ space company is boosting speculation that Blue Origin will select the Central Texas city for a blockbuster investment.

The Austin suburb approved unspecified incentives for the Amazon founder’s Blue Origin Enterprises to develop a $650 million facility, the Austin Business Journal reported. The project is expected to create over 2,000 jobs with an average salary of $88,000.

City officials describe Blue Origin’s potential project as a 1.3 million-square-foot hybrid warehouse, manufacturing, and R&D site, but they’ve otherwise been tight-lipped about the proposal, referring to it as “Project Blue Hub” in meetings, according to the outlet, which confirmed Bezos’ company as the subject via local sourcing.

Blue Origin, which currently launches rockets out of its Corn Ranch facility in West Texas, is also considering other Texas sites, including elsewhere in Williamson County and near the Austin Bergstrom International Airport, which is adjacent to Tesla’s Gigafactory and other Musk company buildings. Blue Origin tapped JLL to help find a home for its future project. It reportedly has narrowed down the search to Texas and Florida.

The search coincides with Williamson County’s effort to brand a stretch of U.S. 183 as the region’s “space corridor,” the outlet wrote. It’s home to headquarters for aerospace company Firefly and defense contractor Valken Industries, both of which are based in Cedar Park.

Bezos’ interest in Texas follows the expansion of Elon Musk’s SpaceX in the Lone Star State. Gov. Greg Abbott confirmed that Musk has selected College Station, home to Texas A&M University, as the home for Terafab, a $55 billion chipmaking facility that will provide hardware for Musk’s products.

The project secured billions in incentives from the state of Texas, Grimes County and local school districts. The first phase is expected to cost $16.8 billion, and the proposed facility will span 100 million square feet.

Williamson County commissioners unanimously approved an economic development agreement Aug. 20 for Blue Origin, Jeff Bezos’ space technology company, to possibly construct a facility on Innovation Boulevard in Hutto.

What we know

The deal would facilitate Blue Origin’s construction of approximately one million square-feet of industrial research space related to the aerospace and defense industry, located in Hutto Crossing industrial park, according to county documents.

The facility represents an $674 million investment in the county, and would create as many as 2,000 jobs in 10 years, officials said at the meeting. This would make it the largest employer in the city of Hutto, Precinct 4 commissioner Russ Boles said

“That's one of the largest economic investments in our county ever,” Judge Steve Snell said. “And it is an American company with American jobs.”

The company has also committed to working with Hutto ISD for paid high school internships, and Career and Technical Education development, Boles said.

Although both the city and county have approved economic development agreements for Blue Origin, the state still must approve the deal, and the company must commit to the site, Snell said. The Hutto site is the only site being considered in Texas, Snell said.

Something to note

The county’s deal mirrors the incentives that the Hutto Economic Development Corporation recently approved, Snell said. The exact details of the agreements have not been made public, and are still under active negotiation, EDC Director Cheney Gamboa said.

“I think the local community has shown support at the city level, the EDC, and now the county,” Gamboa said. “So we hope that’s a strong signal to the state that we really want this project to be in Hutto.”

About the company

Founded in 2000, Blue Origin aims to build reusable rocket technology to lower the cost of space travel, making it more accessible, according to its website.

Blue Origin was the first private company to land a reusable rocket on a landing pad, and has completed 38 missions, sending 98 people into space, according to Britannica.

The company is headquartered in Kent, Seattle, and has test sites in west Texas.

An industrial park in Hutto, a fast-growing suburb northeast of Austin, is poised to add another major technology project later this year.

Colovore, a California-based artificial intelligence data center developer, has filed plans with the state for a $250 million data center. Its move comes roughly two years after initially announcing plans to enter the Austin market.

Construction of the nearly 200,000-square-foot center — roughly the size of the Austin Central Library — will begin in December next door to the Hutto Crossing site that may soon be home to a proposed Blue Origin manufacturing site.

Hutto and Williamson County have approved tax breaks to attract the Amazon founder’s space venture. Blue Origin is shopping for a site for what’s been described as an advanced manufacturing hub, with the Austin area and Florida under consideration. The company is reportedly waiting on possible incentive agreements from the state to make it official.

Blue Origin’s manufacturing operations would create about 2,000 jobs at the site about roughly 11 miles west of Samsung Electronics’ chip factory in nearby Taylor. That plant is set to be in full operation by the end of the year.

Colovore’s Hutto data center will have a cpaacity of 40 megawatts — enough to power 8,000 Texas homes during peak summer demand — and will use liquid-based cooling. The one-story data center will have about five data halls and is anticipated to be completed by the end of 2028, according to its filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.

Williamson County has attracted several major industrial developments recently. As Austin’s available land fills up, companies are looking to the nearby county for larger factory and data center operations.

Massive construction is taking place further east on Texas 79, where a development known as the Hutto Megasite is beginning to take shape. The 1,400-acre site near Samsung’s Taylor plant will soon be home to several large operational data centers as well as technology manufacturing projects.

A data center supplier is also planning to create from 200 to 300 new jobs with a recently opened manufacturing plant in the city.
