HUTTO — Throughout a blustery Friday night, Hutto football displayed explosive talent against Vandegrift: Wide receiver Jaiden Fields caught 13 balls for 251 yards and two touchdowns, running back Keilan Chavies recorded 198 all-purpose yards and a touchdown while quarterback Kaden Stefek completed 29 of 45 passes for 517 yards.

But it was the Vandegrift Vipers who displayed state-championship mettle, grinding out a 44-34 win.

“What you saw tonight was what we’re known for, which is Vandergrift level of fight,” Vipers coach Drew Sanders said. “We’re going to play really, really hard no matter what.”

Hutto (6-2) is off to its best start since 2019. After a disappointing 4-6 season, new head coach Eli Reinhart is trying to maximize a roster that returned most of its highly touted talent from a year ago. But the mounting pressure in Friday's fourth quarter revealed the difference between a talented, inexperienced Hutto team and Vandegrift, which won the Class 6A Division II state championship last year.

It seemed that Hutto had taken the momentum after Stefek connected with Chavies — a three-star prospect committed to Tulsa — for a 20-yard touchdown to cut the deficit to 37-34. The Vipers then went three-and-out, giving the Hippos a chance to take the lead for the first time.

However, Vandegrift stood strong. Even after Hutto converted a massive fourth down to keep the drive alive, the defense didn’t waver.

An illegal man downfield penalty stalled the Hippos' surge and the defense’s perseverance was rewarded when linebacker Luke Davis stepped in front of Hutto wide receiver Dylan Owens, intercepting Stefek's pass with less than 2 minutes left in the game. The Vipers leaned on running back Sam Brown to close it out, and he responded with a game-sealing 42-yard touchdown run.

Brown rushed for 115 yards and two scores while fellow back Justin Moore ran for 105 yards and a touchdown on 28 attempts. Quarterback Miles Teodecki, a Kansas State commit, had an efficient night, passing for 207 yards and two touchdowns on 17 of 21 attempts.

“We kind of wore them down there at the end,” Sanders said.

On pure athletic talent, the Hippos looked superior to the Vipers. Sanders said the staff was worried about how to handle Fields, Owens and Chavies heading into the game, all of whom hold multiple Division I college offers. Fields, specifically, has an incredible sense of space and defensive coverage, partially because he doubles as a safety as well as a wideout. The 2027 three-star prospect holds offers from the likes of Oklahoma, Baylor and Texas A&M.

So Vandegrift mixed up the coverages. Its scheme kept Reinhart’s offense off balance (Stefek added two interceptions to his four touchdowns). Hutto went for every fourth-down attempt it got, yet the Vipers remained unshaken. Reinhart said afterward that his team had mental lapses — penalties, turnovers and a slow start — while the Vipers played a much cleaner game.

“Those are things that we got to clean up if we want to be able to win championships,” Reinhart said. “Vandergrift doesn’t make those errors.”

Vandegrift didn’t blink. Hutto did, and that proved to be the difference.

“I felt like our kids would rise to the occasion, and I felt like that’s what happened in key moments tonight,” Sanders said.

HUTTO — After the Hutto Hippos had rallied for a 35-28 victory Friday night over Bowie, first-year head coach Eli Reinhart reminded his players to enjoy the milestone moments because they don't come around very often.

This was a game for the Hippos to savor. Playing before an enthusiastic crowd at Hutto Memorial Stadium, they scored the game's final 14 points — on touchdown runs by wide receiver Dylan Owens — to win the Class 6A Division bi-district playoff game. Next up for Hutto (9-2) is an area-round matchup against undefeated San Antonio Johnson.

"There were so many times we had our backs to the wall and we could have phoned it in," Reinhart yelled, delivering a fire-and-brimstone pep talk to players, hoisting the bi-district trophy. "This was championship mindset. You never quit, no matter the circumstances."

Here are takeaways from a game that wasn't determined until Hutto stopped Bowie on a fourth-and-17 from its own 29 with 32 seconds to play:

Gut-check time in the fourth quarter

Hutto needed a hero after Bowie receiver Luke Nelson caught a touchdown pass from Brady Lamm with 9:37 to play. With the Bulldogs leading 28-21 — and momentum clearly on their side — Owens stepped to the forefront for Hutto. He scored on a short run with 8:03 to play to tie it up and scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 50-yard burst down the left sideline with 2:55 left that put his team ahead for good 35-28.

"I got a block from the outside and took it to the crib," Owens said.

As a receiver, Owens doesn't get many chance to carry the ball. After all, he had rushed for a total of 21 yards during the regular season. But with first-team running back Keilan Chavies (1,051 yards, 9 touchdowns this season) nursing an ankle sprain for much of the game, he was afforded an opportunity to carry the ball.

"(Owens) is an awesome player," Hutto quarterback Kaden Stefek said. "We need him in clutch situations. He's going to get the job done and go score for you."

Reinhart described Owens as a "money player." Owens gained 73 yards on the ground on only five carries.

Bowie's bid for an upset win spoiled in final minutes

Although no one doubted that Owens was the best Hutto player on the field on Friday, few played any better than Bowie running back Rhys Moreno. The Bulldogs junior finished with a game-high 136 yards — 75 in the second half — and scored three of Bowie's four touchdowns.

After Hutto took the lead with 2:55 to play, Moreno and Lamm led a promising drive that could have tied the game. But a pair of holding penalties proved costly and Lamm's pass on fourth-and-17 in the final minute sailed wide of his intended target.

Reinhart specified two key moments that helped save Hutto's season. The fourth-down stop was obviously critical, but one run by Chavies in the fourth quarter changed momentum, the coach said. Despite his bad ankle, Chavies was able to burst through the line for 41 yards before being tackled one yard short of the end zone. Owens finished the drive with a touchdown to tie the score.

"My favorite part was finally getting that fourth-down stop at the end," Reinhart said. "Second, it was (Chavies) breaking that run after an ankle injury. He found the strength to get back in there. We were able to punch it in a couple downs later. Not only was this a football lesson, it was also a life lesson."

A night to savor, indeed.

"This is a storybook for this community to come out here like this and for our kids to get a home playoff game and experience this type of environment," Reinhart said. "I don't know if you can trade anything like this for the world.

"This is one of my favorite topics because I’m so passionate about it. I love that we’re a fast-growing community—but we also want to be smart about that growth," said Billie Logiudice with the Hutto Area Chamber of Commerce. "One of the ways we’re doing that is through our Hutto Community Foundation, where we're really focused on workforce development. We’re asking: How do we make sure the next generation is prepared for the jobs coming to our area?"

"We have strong partnerships with Opportunity Austin, our Economic Development Corporation, the City of Hutto, our outstanding school district, and local higher education institutions. Together, we’re building a pipeline—from elementary school through college or career certifications—so students are prepared at any level and able to keep progressing. In honor of the 40-year milestone, special tributes and historical displays will be on site, highlighting how the event has grown alongside the community.

Global semiconductor equipment maker ASML will become the first office tenant in office space at The Hutto Co-Op District, marking another addition to central Texas’ fast-growing tech and manufacturing region.

MA Partners, the developer behind The Hutto Co-Op, announced that ASML will lease more than 32,000 square feet of office space and about 2,100 square feet of rooftop terrace in a new four-story building, according to a news release.

What you need to know

ASML, based in the Netherlands, makes the high-tech machines, software and services that help companies like Samsung and Intel produce computer chips. Its technology uses light to print small patterns on silicon, a process known as lithography.

ASML already operates several offices and facilities across the U.S., including sites in Connecticut, Arizona, California and Texas.

The new Hutto location will expand the company’s U.S. footprint, aligning with Central Texas’ growing role in the semiconductor industry.

Hutto Mayor Mike Snyder said the company’s arrival complements the region’s tech expansion.

"This is a great complement to the Prologis and Skybox Data Center Campus, spanning over 220 acres, and the new Tesla industrial building covering 35,000 square feet. We are a growing community with 54 languages spoken, and the diversity of career opportunities, people and cultures in Hutto has helped make this a highly desirable location for companies seeking to establish a footprint or expand their operations in Central Texas,” Snyder said in a press release.

The Co-Op District, which also houses Hutto City Hall and the public library, features restaurants, retail and event space designed to create a walkable downtown hub.

Officials have not yet announced when ASML will open its Hutto offices.

HUTTO, Texas — After trailing by two touchdowns before its offense ever snapped the ball, Hutto rallied to take a halftime lead, then held off Round Rock, 33-31, in a thrilling District 25-6A game at Memorial Stadium on Friday night.

The Dragons (3-4, 3-2) tried for a game-tying two-point conversion following a spectacular 39-yard touchdown pass from Dov Stickler to Daniel Barry with less than one minute remaining. Round Rock could not convert a pass attempt that Hunter Frenette broke up in the end zone.

How’s that for Hippo swagger?

“This was huge for our program,” first-year Hutto head coach Eli Reinhart said. “Huge for our confidence. Huge for believing in everything we have been saying. There’s proof in the pudding now a little bit. With high school kids, that’s what matters the most.”

Hutto quarterback Kaden Stefek and two-way starter Jaiden Fields came up huge for the Hippos (5-1, 4-0). The dynamic duo connected for the first three touchdowns of the game for Hutto after they trailed, 13-0, and didn’t touch the ball on offense until the 1:47 mark of the first quarter.

“It was very similar to last week when we had the ball three times in the first half,” Reinhart said. “It’s kind of weird not having the football, but our kids were ready to go on offense. It could be easy to have a slow start, then all of the sudden it’s two turnovers of possession, and the game is lost.

“Our kids did a great job of sticking with it on both sides of the ball,” Rinehart said. “It wasn’t great early on defense, but we have done a great job at halftime of making adjustments to win games.”

Fields, a junior receiver and defensive back, got Hutto on the board with a dazzling 64-yard touchdown reception from Stefek, then added a 44-yard touchdown catch on which he tipped the ball in the air to himself to secure the grab.

Following a Round Rock punt — the first of the game for either team — Fields caught a 19-yard touchdown pass to give the Hippos the lead for good.

“At this point last season, we were 3-3,” Fields said. “It feels great to be on top of the district. If we would have lost, it would have been a big shuffle for everybody. The win keeps us at the top and keeps us going.”

Round Rock moved into field goal range late in the first half before running out of time for an attempt to keep Hutto’s lead at 20-19 at the break. The Dragons missed a pair of two-point conversion attempts in the first half.

After a 1-yard touchdown run by Stefek, Round Rock cut the lead to one on a touchdown strike from Stickler to Barry. But Hutto blocked the PAT to hold onto its 26-25 lead with 11:39 left in the game.

“We stayed motivated,” Stefek said. “Going back out on the field, knowing we were going to score, always staying positive and always trusting our guys.”

On the ensuing possession, Hutto scored on a 9-yard touchdown run by Tulsa commit Keilan Chavies. The PAT gave the Hippos a 33-25 advantage. Fields intercepted a pass on Round Rock’s next possession.

Stefek finished 14-of-24 for 276 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. Fields caught six passes for 164 yards and three touchdowns and had one punt return for 17 yards.

“Jaiden is one of the best players not only in this area but in the state on both sides of the ball,” Reinhart said. “He plays every single snap, and he is a game-changer. We did some stuff with him that was a little bit different and found the matchups we wanted. He took advantage.

“It takes a quarterback who is putting the ball in the right position to give us those opportunities. Kaden did a phenomenal job. He never got stirred up, shaken. We missed some things, but he always bounced right back on the next play. He ran the ball hard tonight. Huge win. We couldn’t do it without these two. They’re vital to our program and to our team.”

Hutto is now alone in first place atop the District 25-6A standings. The Hippos have games against Round Rock Stony Point, Austin Vandergrift, Cedar Park Vista Ridge and Round Rock McNeil remaining. Hutto will look to keep rolling on both sides of the ball over the next four weeks.

“It was huge, for sure,” Stefek said. “We trust in our coach to call the plays, no matter when we get the ball, how we get it, what down we have. We know we’re going to go out there, convert a first down and score. We trust in each other.”
