For starters, I would like sincerely apologize to Deterioration, Left To Suffer and the venerable Crowbar for missing their sets ; I’d been on the phone all evening with Kalshi customer support—it seems someone ran up several thousand dollars of charges to my credit card making trades last weekend on whether or not James Hetfield would use his Sphere platform to make a political statement. The bad news is, my dog’s college fund was cleaned out. On the bright side, I had exactly enough cash left over for Sanguisugabogg’s BLUEY ON A STABBING SPREE shirt, so it’s not a total disaster.

Emo’s, for those who’ve not been, is a charmless, character-free aircraft hanger on our city’s southeastern side and aside from the brand name, cannot be confused with the deeply beloved punk dump that operated downtown for ages. Were Columbus’ Sanguisugabogg capable of teleporting themselves back to those halcyon days, they’d undoubtedly be right at home in said squalid, chaotic environment. Semi-plagued with a FOH mix I will charitably describe as boomy-as-fook, the band managed, regardless to trundle their way thru a smattering of career highlights showcasing their considerable range (songs about tearing someone’s face off, killing people, killing people and turning them into furniture, etc.) While this was my first time seeing them since the recent exit of Cedrik Davis and Cody Davidson’s transition from drums to guitar, this was not appreciably different than their last headline appearance in Austin some 11 months ago (OK, there was at least one more fight and I would like that officially noted at setlist.fm). There’s no denying they bring the brutality with wit and panache, I just wish it was twice as loud (and perhaps it is just that on other occasions—also, I cannot hear for shit)

Superficial similarities aside, Dying Fetus’ presentation was a study in contrasts and deft execution—the level of technical proficiency is off the charts (assuming there’s a chart for such things) and IN SPITE OF THIS they’re as deliberately bludgeoning as any rival you care to cite. Guitarist/vocalist John Gallagher—the lone remaining founding member—is all business (singing about unmitigated carnage is his business and business is growing at steady clip, as the saying goes). The cliché “foundational band” gets tossed around for ensembles working atop paper mache far too often but in this case, it couldn’t be more true. We’re beyond lucky to be living and breathing in a world where Dying Fetus cast such an immense creative shadow, which is slightly ironic given the subject matter extols the virtues of well, stuff that’s the opposite of living and breathing.

AUSTIN (KXAN) — He may not be a professional athlete, but Noah Kahan has been selling out baseball stadium shows this year and will soon bring his music to even bigger stadiums, including a historic show in Austin.

Kahan is currently on his biggest tour to date, The Great Divide World Tour, which will wrap up in December. The tour has sold out several baseball stadiums across the U.S., including a record-breaking, sold-out, four-show run at Fenway.

After a few months off, Kahan will hit the road again next spring with an even bigger tour, The Last Of The Bugs World Tour, where he’ll do a 31-date stadium run at some of the biggest stadiums across North America, Europe, and the U.K.

This tour will also bring a historic show to Austin.

Kahan will bring his Last of The Bugs tour to the Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium on May 15, marking the venue’s first major ticketed show in over 30 years, according to Texas Athletics.

“Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium has a 100-plus year history of hosting major events in Austin, including some pretty spectacular concerts from artists including The Eagles, ZZ Top, Santana and Joe Cocker and more recently Brooks & Dunn, Leon Bridges and Parker McCollum,” Chris Del Conte, Vice President and Lois and Richard Folger Athletics Director, said in a press release. “Noah Kahan’s The Last Of The Bugs World Tour is expected to sell out football stadiums across the country, and we are excited to have his stop at DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium further cement Austin’s reputation as the Live Music Capital of the World.”

The only other Texas show will be in Houston at the Reliant Stadium on May 12.

There will be a Noah Kahan Artist Presale on Tuesday, November 10 at noon. Those interested must sign up online by Thursday, November 5 at 10:59 p.m.

Longhorn Foundation donors and/or Texas Football season ticket holders, as well as UT students, faculty and staff interested in attending, are “highly encouraged” to sign up for the Artist Presale, Texas Athletics said in the release. Texas Football season ticket holders will not have access to their season ticket seat locations for the concert, and there will not be any ticket presales through Texas Athletics.

There will also be a “Reserved by Spotify” presale on Wednesday, November 11. Details can be found online.

Remaining tickets will be available via the general on sale starting Thursday, November 12 at noon at texaslonghorns.com/noahkahan.

BULLDOGS BULLETIN10K Day Set for Nov. 13 against Tennessee 10K Day Presented by Buffalo Wild Wings will be on Friday, Nov. 13, when the Bulldogs host Tennessee at Stegeman Coliseum. Georgia has set program and state NCAA volleyball attendance records each of the last two seasons on 10K Day. Last season's 10K Day set the current mark of 8,719 fans. The Bulldogs will look to break both records again in 2026 with the goal of welcoming 10 thousand fans this season.

A Look at What's Ahead Georgia returns home to host No. 23 Vanderbilt at Stegeman Coliseum on Sunday, Nov. 1. It'll be Vanderbilt's first-ever trip to Athens. First serve is slated for 2 p.m. at Stegeman.

Let's Recap Georgia dropped a pair of four-set matches over the weekend at Stegeman Coliseum, falling to No. 19 Texas A&M on Friday and Missouri on Sunday. It was Georgia's first losses at home this season after starting 8-0 inside Stegeman. Bianna Muoneke tallied 6.00 kills a set on the weekend and hit .264 on 121 total attempts. Setter Chloe Elarton recorded her team-leading seventh and eighth double-doubles, and was Georgia's second-best defender with 2.88 digs per set (23 total).

A Third SEC Weekly Honor for MuonekeBianna Muoneke was named the SEC Co-Offensive Player of the Week, her third conference weekly award this season, on Oct. 19. Muoneke tallied 49 total kills in eight sets, averaging 6.13 per set en route to a pair of road wins for Georgia this weekend. She hit .440 on the outside, taking 100 swings, and committing just five errors. She recorded a new career-high, hitting .581 in a sweep at Ole Miss on Friday, tallying 19 kills in three sets, tied for sixth-highest in a three-set match. Her .581 hitting clip was the 10th highest all-time, taking 20 or more attempts. On Sunday, Muoneke tipped the 30-kill mark for the first time in her career, finishing with 30 kills in the win at LSU. She hit .377 and picked up her fifth double-double of the season with 11 digs. Her 30 kills were the third most all-time in a five-set match at Georgia, and she's the first Bulldog to hit 30 kills since 2024.

Bulldogs Getting Noticed A total of four Bulldogs have earned seven SEC weekly awards in 2026: Bianna Muoneke (three-time offensive), Gigi Artiles (two-time freshman), Chloe Elarton (setter), and Tori Harper (defensive). This ties the program record for individuals to win a player of the week award and is the first time Georgia has had an offensive, a defensive, a setter, and a freshman of the week in a single season. Georgia's seven awards are the most since 2019 (7).

Muoneke Inducted into Georgia's 1,000-Kill Club Outside hitter Bianna Muoneke recorded the 1,000th kill of her Georgia career in the fifth set at LSU on Sunday, Oct. 18. She is the 21st member of Georgia's 1,000-Kill Club. Muoneke talliled a career-best 30 kills in the match. She eclipsed the 1,000 kill mark of her collegiate career in Georgia's match against Furman on Aug. 29 at Stegeman Coliseum.

As Market Square Architects (MSA) marks its 10th year in business, the firm has added two experienced architects with deep roots in Austin and Nashville to expand its leadership team. Longtime Austin architect John Puhr, AIA, has been named Director of the Texas Region, and David Grisham, RA, has joined MSA as Director of Client Relationships. As Director of Client Relationships, he will focus on strengthening relationships with clients and development partners in Austin and Nashville while supporting firmwide growth initiatives.

In Texas, Puhr brings more than 25 years of architectural experience and an extensive track record in the Austin market. A graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, he founded Root Architecture in 2011 and grew the practice from a solo practice into a diverse, multifaceted team that completed nearly 300 projects over 14 years. His experience spans multifamily and single-family housing, mixed-use, commercial, retail, hospitality, restaurant, civic, and higher education projects.

As Director of the Texas Region, Puhr now provides leadership and vision for MSA’s Austin office and supports clients and project teams throughout Texas and the Southwest. He is licensed in Texas, Arizona, Tennessee, and Nevada.

More than a quarter of all Austin residents are expected to be 65 or older by 2060. That's according to Lila Valencia, who has been the city’s demographer since 2021.

“Even though by general statistics, [Austin’s] relatively young, it is aging pretty rapidly,” Valencia said.

Valencia spoke during a recent interview with KUT’s Long View producer and host Jennifer Stayton and editor Syeda Carrillo.

She said city planners have had their eyes on this trend for years. In 2014, the Austin City Council created a Commission on Aging.

“Austin is one of the few large cities nationwide where the [non-Hispanic] white population was really driving growth,” Valencia said.

The Black population is Austin's second oldest, followed by the Asian population.

“When we look at who’s growing older the fastest, that’s definitely the Asian population,” Valencia said. “[They are] really starting to build roots in Austin.”

Austin's median age is a little under 35 — below Texas’ median age of about 36 and the national median age of about 40. By 2060, seniors are expected to compose 28.4% of the city's total population. This is higher than the estimate for Texas overall, which is 21.7%.

“That really puts both Texas and Austin in what demographers call a super-aged society,” Valencia said.

Demographers expect this shift to have trickle-down effects on life in Austin: fewer people in the workforce, higher demands on healthcare and changing housing needs.

According to city data, the majority of seniors in Austin live with a spouse, with the second largest portion living alone. Those who live alone typically live within the urban core, while seniors who live with their children are more likely to live in the suburbs.

Jake Wegmann, an associate professor in the School of Architecture at UT Austin, said a preference for single-family homes could put additional pressure on Austin's housing market in the coming decades.

"What we're going to have to grapple with is a lot of elderly people who really don't want to leave their homes ... but as they age, it's just getting tougher and tougher for them to do that," Wegmann said.

Many single-family homes in Austin are also in car-dependent areas. Wegmann said seniors could be made to choose between continuing to drive, which could be dangerous, or giving up their car keys, which could further isolation.

"I don't think we're really prepared for what happens as a society when we have very large numbers of people who are marooned in their houses," Wegmann said.
