The severe weather was largely out of San Antonio by midnight, having also brought showers and strong winds.

SAN ANTONIO — Strong storms brought large hail, severe wind gusts and rain to a San Antonio region that was sorely in need of it on Sunday night.

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch scheduled to expire at 1 a.m. Monday for Bexar and surrounding counties expired early as the storm system exited to the east. It knocked out power to a few hundred CPS Energy customers and pummeled Kerrville with golf-ball sized hail or larger early.

Flooding wasn't a major concern because the thunderstorms moved quickly across the Interstate 25 corridor. But those in the Hill Country may have gotten the worst of it as large hail came raining down Sunday evening—some of it appearing to be the size of baseballs.

Sunday's rain probably wasn't enough to lift Bexar County out of its extreme drought status, the driest tier designated by the U.S. Drought Monitor. But it nonetheless gave the San Antonio community a small taste of what's been missing in 2025.

According to the National Weather Service, the San Antonio International Airport had recorded just 1.71 inches of rain through the first two months of the year, a span of time that historically soaks the city with a combined 3.7 inches of rain. And March had seen just 0.06 inches, in what was shaping up to be an exceptionally dry month.

According to NWS reports compiling data recorded at the airport, Sunday night brought 0.31 inches of rain to San Antonio. That makes it the third-wettest day of the year so far, behind only Feb. 11, when 0.36 inches of rain fell, and Jan. 9, when 0.82 inches of rain dampened the Alamo City.

Andrew Brown said he's grateful his family was inside the Home Depot at the time of the hailstorm and no one was hurt.

KERRVILLE, Texas — From appliance stores to churches, Sunday’s hailstorm left its mark of destruction across Kerrville.

Andrew Brown, who owns a construction company, was with his family at Home Depot preparing for the week when the hail really started coming down.

Brown says he whipped out his phone, capturing the chaos, as the ice chunks rained down on cars and broke through the Home Depot skylight.

“It was incredibly loud," Brown said. "The video really doesn’t do it justice. It was really hard to hear anybody talk, just breaking through the skylights causing extensive damage."

He’s just grateful his loved ones are safe despite the extensive damage that now exists on the family car they’ve only had for four months.

“It could have been way worse had we been on the road,” Brown said. “You can tell there’s dents pretty much all up and down it. It got mostly every portion even down to the lights, it just really did a number. The windshield is done for.”

Kerrville Bible Church and Greater Hope Church still stand but bear the scars from Mother Nature.

Most of Greater Hope Church’s windows are all blown out while a trail of ice lingers around the property.

Then just up Harper Road, is the church where Scott Christensen serves as associate pastor. The hailstorm inflicted extensive damage on the roof and side of the main building at Kerrville Bible Church.

Christensen recalls wrapping up a meeting at the church on Sunday night, noticing waves of clouds overhead. It wasn’t until he got home and checked social media when Christensen realized the magnitude of the unfolding weather event.

“I don’t think we’ve ever had anything quite like this,” Christensen said.

He said church leaders assessed the damage that evening and on Monday, the community came together to clean up debris, including broken tree branches that littered the property.

“Several of our buildings are only a couple years old so kind of a bummer that they got some serious sustained damage,” Christensen said. “Doesn’t stop what we do here. God’s good to us.”

A storm system that brought heavy rain and hail to the Midwest on Saturday expanded into Texas late Sunday as warm, humid air surged in from the Gulf of Mexico.

In the Hill Country, a severe thunderstorm watch led to golf ball-sized hail and wind gusts of 60 to 65 mph, with some reports of baseball-sized hail in the area.

One user on X shared a compilation of photos and videos, stating that the hail "came down for at least 15 minutes" and possibly as long as 20 to 25 minutes. He described it as the worst hailstorm he had witnessed in his 21 years in Kerrville.

Another video shows hail pelting a backyard pool, striking the water so fast that the churning waves resemble a stormy sea while trees in the background sway violently in the strong wind gusts.

A later post from a higher vantage point captures the aftermath of the hailstorm, showing the city blanketed in a misty haze that resembles fog.

This effect is likely caused by hail rapidly melting upon contact with the warmer ground, creating a layer of evaporative moisture.

Aside from the massive hail, the storm in Texas did not cause major concerns such as flooding or tornadoes. However, as the system moved east into Ruston, Louisiana, it triggered tornado warnings.

The storm likely did not bring the area out of drought status. However, rain is also forecast for late Tuesday into Wednesday, ahead of another storm affecting parts of South Texas starting later Wednesday. The storm will move slowly, allowing rain to fall for an extended period of time, AccuWeather said.

As San Antonio enters its "most active week of weather" for this spring, many parts of the Hill Country were the first to be hit with the latest surprise from Texas' unpredictable weather. Several areas were hit with "egg-sized hail" on Sunday, March 23, while others remained under severe thunderstorm watch.

The National Weather Service issued a warning around 7:20 p.m. for Ingram, Kerrville, and nearby areas, advising residents to take cover due to the threat.

Kerrville residents reported seeing large hail falling from the skies that evening, and many others experienced significant damage to their vehicles. The hail measured at about 2 inches in diameter, according to the Interactive Hail Maps website.

"RIP to this guy's Kia," one user said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter. "Hail tore up everything. And broke my windshield."

In their video, the ground near their vehicle, which has been covered in a tarp, is shown blanketed in ice. Another clip shows the user driving with a cracked windshield as hail continues to plummet from above. Winds were also up to 50 mph, making conditions life threatening, according to the National Weather Service.

Kerville's Severe Thunderstorm Warning expired at 8:15 p.m. The following morning, on March 24, residents reported foggy conditions and damage to road signs in the city.

Meanwhile, the hailstorm blew in to parts of San Antonio and Austin around 10:30 p.m., especially in the northwest part of the city. Local meteorologist Daniel Pretelin described the hail as "chickpea-sized."

The intensity of the thunderous storms along the I-35 corridor decreased just before midnight. In the coming week, chances of widespread showers in the San Antonio-area continue, following a few days of temperatures in the low 90's.
