The accolades span from favorite bars and restaurants to iconic traditions. The Comal River, famous for its spring-fed water and popular tube chute, drives thousands to the small town. The popular river was named the best outdoor activity in Texas.

The Gruene historic district took the statewide title of best shopping district. Its unique mix of boutiques, live music and vintage Texas charm has made it a premier destination.

The city's vibrant monthly arts event, Art Haus, was named the best art festival. Hosted in downtown New Braunfels, the Art Haus features a curated selection of vendors showcasing their homemade jewelry, pottery, textiles and much more.

Sidecar at the historic Prince Solms Inn earned top bar honors for its crafted cocktails and speakeasy style. Plus, the city's beloved Wurstfest, a 10-day celebration to German culture, was recognized as the best food festival. If it feels like something new pops up off the rapidly growing I-35 corridor every time you drive by, you're not imagining it. A Texas Hill Country development has exploded into one of the most active commercial zones in the state, and at the center of it all is the 400-acre Town Center at Creekside.

What began as a sparsely populated retail strip a decade ago is now a magnet for top-tier brands and a regional draw for millions in New Braunfels, drawing more than 120,000 vehicles every day. The newest wave of development focuses on family dining and entertainment, headlined by a massive upgrade to EVO Entertainment.

The revamped complex features 14 theaters, an ultimate IMAX experience, a modernized lobby and new food and drink options aimed at turning a night at the movies into an all-evening outing, according to NewsQuest property documents. EVO joins a growing slate of experience-based destinations, including the soon-to-open Topgolf, which will bring 37,000 square feet of high-tech driving range fun and full-service dining.

Beyond entertainment, Creekside is rapidly filling out with a mix of confirmed and proposed retail and dining additions that reflect the area’s explosive growth. A proposed 25,000-square-foot Nordstrom could introduce luxury shopping to the corridor for the first time.

After catastrophic flooding devastated parts of the Hill Country and Central Texas over the Fourth of July weekend, the state is facing a mounting death toll. Officials report more than 120 lives lost and more than 170 people still missing after days of severe storms and swollen rivers.

Though New Braunfels was not among the hardest hit, its residents responded with compassion. On Thursday, July 10, hundreds gathered downtown for a Candlelight Vigil of Hope to honor those affected and shine a light on the importance of grief and mental health support in the wake of disaster.

Organized by River City Advocacy in partnership with Hope Hospice and other local nonprofits, the event brought together counselors, community leaders and families. Handheld candles were distributed at the plaza, where people stood shoulder-to-shoulder in silence, prayer and remembrance.

"If there’s one thing that New Braunfels knows, it’s how to gather and how to support each other, especially in times of flooding and tragedy," said Heather Harrison, director of development at Hope Hospice and Hope Hospice Foundation. "Community is a very important thing to this town and the towns surrounding it. It still feels like a small town because of how we gather, even though we’re over a hundred thousand people now."

Counselors were stationed throughout the plaza, part of a deliberate effort to make mental health support visible and approachable.

"We wanted to make sure there were counselors available in the event someone needed help at the moment," Harrison said. "But also to show that there are real people,who aren’t scary, who are available after today and just want to help."

The gathering also served as a reminder of the region's own history with flooding. Harrison noted that for many, the tragedy triggered memories of previous storms, and that grief can resurface, even if the current loss isn’t direct.

"We know, as New Braunfelsers, how long it takes to recover, how long the pain lasts," she said.

Hope Hospice continues to offer no-cost grief counseling for those affected by loss, whether from this flood or previous trauma. Additional resources are being shared by partner organizations and posted online.

"Grief is a reflection of love, and love doesn’t go away," Harrison said. "We’re still here, and we’ll keep showing up."

Long summer days spent floating the famed Comal River or splashing through the nationally renowned Schlitterbahn Waterpark are sure to work up an appetite in this adventure-packed Hill Country town.

For hungry visitors and locals, a taste of Europe is coming to New Braunfels this summer. Favorite Neighbor, a European-inspired restaurant and wine bar, is set to open its doors in July, just a few minutes from the Comal River and Schlitterbahn. As New Braunfels continues to grow, the addition of Favorite Neighbor adds a fresh, European flair to the city’s evolving culinary scene.

Favorite Neighbor aims to feel just like its name suggests, the kind of place you pop into after work, bring visiting friends or make your go-to spot for a casual glass of wine and a plate of something comforting. The concept is the brainchild of Abigail Porter, who says her goal is to create a welcoming, neighborhood-driven space.

"My biggest goal is for [Favorite Neighbor] to be a space that people can come and hang out, Porter tells MySA. "We're not in the middle of the hustle and bustle of downtown. I think it's going to be something really different from what we have in town."

The business is expected to open mid- to late-July, Porter says.

With business expected to start in the next couple of weeks, the 25-year-old owner, who moved to New Braunfels during her teenage years, is looking to tap into her travel experience for this new venture. Spain, Portugal, Italy and Indonesia are just some of the places that have deepened Porter's love for culture and food.

The side of her business now reads "Vino" and "Tapas" for all who pass by the corner lot. Translated, that’s wine and small plates of food, two words that offer a glimpse into what’s to come. The menu will feature scratch-made small plates and sandwiches on house-baked breads. It’s the kind of selection meant to be shared and savored alongside the perfect glass of wine.

Porter, who is originally from Lockhart, teases other dishes like homemade focaccia (Italian bread), homemade humus and Spanish chorizo along with a seafood dish here and there.

"I am really excited to bring life to that side of New Braunfels, rather than just downtown," she exclaims. "I'm excited to create a kind of middle ground where you can have a cup of coffee, eat a snack, enjoy a glad of wine and lay low."
