A family entertainment center in Hutto, formerly being built as EVO Entertainment, will now be executed as Hooky, Es Vedra Cinema’s new brand.

The movie and bowling venue is still on track to open in May, said Chris Cline, head of development at Es Vedra Cinemas, in a presentation to the Hutto Economic Development Corporation on March 10.

“We are definitely in the finishing stage,” Cline said. “The city has worked with us on all the inspections.”

Es Vedra Cinemas worked with branding agency Helms Workshop to create Hooky.

“If you think about what EVO was, this is bigger, better, stronger, faster, more exciting, more involved and more elevated while still being really accessible,” founder and Creative Director Christian Helms said at the EDC meeting.

As more and more residents are getting pushed out of Austin they are looking to the surrounding communities for new homes. One such community is now taking a big step forward with a new project aimed at revitalizing the city.

Hutto is a city of over 40,000 people northeast of Austin, next to Round Rock. Known for having one of the best mascots in Texas, developers are now seeking approval for a new community project to breathe new life into the growing area. Get ready to meet "The Gateway at Hutto."

The 257-acre project is proposed for an area south of US 79 between FM 685 and CR 137. East Wilco Highway divides the plot into north and south with space for multifamily (29.2 acres), townhomes (12.2), residential (67.7) commercial mixed-used (57.6) open space (73.5) and 16 acres for future developments.

Residential, townhome and multifamily plots will act as borders on the north and south portions of the Gateway, while retail, office and restaurant spaces will sit on either side to the east near CR 137. The greenery open spaces will stretch throughout the property with three lakes of varying size. A bridge modeled after the land bridge in Peachtree Corners, Georgia will help connect the eastern and western portions of the lake and allow residents to walk across during excursions.

"Part of the reason we’re so excited about the project is that it will bring the first truly master-planned community to Hutto, complete with a variety of residential offerings for all stages of life," Jake Straub of Capland Development said to MySA, "adjacent and walkable retail and restaurants, significant open space for residents not only of the community but also of Hutto as a whole to enjoy, a hotel and conference center for area businesses and private events, and a landmark bridge over the properties’ primary lake that will serve as a welcome sign to those passing by, passing through, and those fortunate enough to call this community (and others surrounding it) home. We’re hoping to provide much needed retail and a mixture of housing products to an underserved area of the region."

Capland Development, along with land planners Rialto Studios in Austin, shared images of what visitors can expect once the Gateway is finished. Examples shared with the City of Hutto included areas for H-E-B, shopping districts like in Georgetown and waterside food and drink spots like Mozart's Coffee Roasters in Austin.

Austin Business Journal reports developers do not have a timeframe for the project yet but will move forward as soon as possible.

Hutto's population has been skyrocketing year over year, going from 28,000 in 2019 to 42,000 in 2024 five years later. World Population Review predicts Hutto will hit 60,000 by 2029. So, a project like Gateway will be a welcome addition to the growing Hutto Hippos.
