The massive $83.5 million Lotto Texas jackpot may be surrounded in controversy, never to be cashed out, but that isn't stopping other Texas Lottery players from raking in the green. Such is the case for an Austin-area resident who turned an H-E-B pit stop into a million-dollar prize.

A resident in Elgin, 25 miles east of Austin, has claimed a $1 million jackpot from the Texas Lottery. The winner clinched the jackpot after playing the 500X scratch ticket game they purchased at the H-E-B at 1080 Highway 290 W., Elgin, TX 78621, according to a Texas Lottery news release.

The Texas Lottery shared that this was the sixth of 15 top prizes worth $1 million that has been claimed as of Thursday, March 20. The 500X game offers more than $229 million in total prizes, with overall odds of winning any prize standing at one in 3.36.

The winner chose to remain anonymous but it was a promising day for the Texas Lottery Commission. For while the company is being investigated over a pair of controversial jackpots, USA Today named it one of the top workplaces in the country on Thursday.

This Elgin resident is the second Central Texan to win $1 million this month.

ELGIN, Texas — An Elgin resident is $1 million richer after claiming the top prize winning ticket in the Texas Lottery game 500X.

The ticket was purchased at an H-E-B located at 1080 Highway 290 West in Elgin. The winner has chosen to remain anonymous.

This was the sixth of 15 top prizes worth $1 million to be claimed in this game, and the Texas Lottery said 500X offers over $229 million in total prizes.

The Elgin resident is also the second Central Texan to win $1 million this month. An Austin resident recently purchased a winning $1 million Powerball ticket.

The recent wins come less than two months after an $83.5 million Lotto Texas with Extra! ticket was purchased at a retail store in North Austin, prompting an investigation into the state's third-party courier systems. These systems include websites or apps that purchase lottery tickets directly from retailers for their customers.

Several Texas leaders, including Gov. Greg Abbott, questioned the system's legitimacy after that Austin ticket was bought through the Jackpocket app, owned by DraftKings.

On Feb. 24, Abbott called for the Texas Rangers to investigate two drawings, including the nearly $84 million win in Austin. That same day, the Texas Lottery Commission stated that third-party courier services were no longer permitted in the state.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton also scrutinized third-party systems as he launched an investigation into several "suspicious and possibly unlawful" wins.

The woman who won the $83.5 million is now waiting to see if she'll ever get a payout.

A resident from Elgin, Texas, is exponentially more rich after hitting big on a scratch ticket game.

The winner, who chose to remain anonymous, claimed a top-prize-winning ticket on March 17, 2025, worth $1 million in the Texas Lottery scratch ticket game 500X. The winning ticket was purchased at an H-E-B grocery store, located at 1080 Highway 290 W., in Elgin.

Elgin is located about 25 miles east of Austin in Bastrop County. The population of the city is 9,784, according to 2020 U.S. census data.

This was the sixth of 15 top prizes worth $1 million to be claimed in this game. A seventh top-prize-winning ticket also was claimed on March 17, meaning there are only eight top-prize tickets still up for grabs.

In addition to those eight remaining top-prize tickets, there also are 28 second-prize tickets worth $25,000 each that have yet to be claimed.

500X, which costs $50 per ticket, offers more than $229 million in total prizes. Each ticket offers 33 chances to win a prize. Main gameplay consists of 30 numbers that players try to match to 10 winning numbers. If a 2X, 5X, 10X, 20X or 500X symbol is revealed, the player multiplies their winnings by that amount. There also are three cash bonus areas. If a player reveals two matching prize amounts in the same cash bonus, they win the amount shown.

The odds of winning the $1 million top prize are 1-in-400,000. Overall odds of winning any prize in the game are 1-in-3.36, including break-even prizes. Prizes range from $50 to the $1 million top prize.

Beginning with the first ticket sold in 1992, the Texas Lottery has generated more than $40 billion in revenue for the state and distributed more than $90 billion in prizes to lottery players. The Texas Lottery provides several games for players, including Powerball, Mega Millions, Lotto Texas, All or Nothing, Texas Two Step, Pick 3, Daily 4, Cash Five and scratch ticket games.
